- I’m pretty much still watching Gabriel Dropout for Satania, who is my favorite kind of character (think Toudou from Yowamushi Pedal). Peter Fobian explains Satania’s cringeworthy charm in his latest on Crunchyroll.
- SUPER GALS IS ON CRUNCHYROLL THIS IS NOT A DRILL. Here’s a really old review I wrote of Super Gals back when I was really bad at writing reviews, and I can barely read it without cringing. I have no idea why I gave it a “kind of recommends” rating when I remember it so fondly now.
- 16 Female AniTubers You Should Subscribe To. It seems like YouTube is really the future of anime content. Blogs like mine will go away and we’ll all be watching channels. Subscribing to YouTube anime reviewers makes me feel less like an out-of-touch oldtaku.

- I was quoted in an article about the ties between the far right and anime fandom, and I could write an entire post clarifying what I said. For one, I never said anything about “bored young men” in particular, and noted that anime fandom (or at least con attendance) is 50% female now. Even so, you should absolutely read this deep dive into the chilling connection between fandom and radical politics.

- Now that the month is almost over, the #28DaysOfBlackCosplay hashtag on Twitter has filled up with some incredible costumes. To give credit where it’s due, Chaka Cumberbatch launched this tag years ago!

“Blogs like mine will go away and we’ll all be watching channels.” I doubt it — the written word provides a kind of immersivity and convenience distinct from video. There’s great stuff going on in fandom generally in both video and blogging; they are complementary more than one eclipses the other.
Question: do you and I feel that way because we are old? Feels like people don’t just launch new anime blogs like they used to – it’s all video now!
See: Anime Feminist.
Lauren – the thing about YouTube is that it’s heavily catered towards teenagers. And teenagers = eyeballs since they make up a huge majority of the audience on YouTube. They have more free time than anyone else, so uhh yeah. Video has its place, but I know there are content creators who are annoyed at YouTube for various reasons.
I thought about doing a manga podcast on Twitch out of all places since real-life stuff is apparently a thing over there. I’ve seen someone do art on Twitch. The speedrunning community seems to dislike YouTube a bit because it’s perhaps a BIT TOO casual and they prefer Twitch as their outlets for videos.
Also, I once made a tweet saying Anitwitter is so goddamn white as I see it. I’m Chinese, but I don’t feel like I’m a part of you guys because I’m like 1 out of 10000000.
Oh wow, that’s definitely white privilege that I didn’t even consider the fact that most Anitwitter people I talk to are white. Amelia of Anime Feminist is a visible outlier though. I’ve done gender research but not ethnicity when it comes to fans. I should definitely look into it. Have you seen studies?
She’s a very visible outliner along with a few others. About ethnicity, it’s just observations honestly from my experiences being around the NYC anime community. You had a link to that Anime Milwaukee article where it focused on the African-American community there, so there’s also that. I may have to do some research on this because I had a discussion about this with someone a whie back.
My big thing on watching videos is that watching a video takes too long. I can read so much faster.
Then again, I also have a bit of a hearing issue or some such where I have trouble focusing, digesting, and maintaining the thread of thought when only listening. Reading is so much easier for me. I also find that I better consider and reflect than I do when watching a video.
If there is a new story that’s a video and it doesn’t contain an attached article I usually skip it. If there is a speech I’m interested in I’d rather wait and hope there is a transcript. Beats watching the entire thing most of the time.
Definitely going to start watching Gabriel DropOut now.
