- This was a big week for me because my collaboration with Crunchyroll came out on Monday! In celebration of the 38th Anniversary of Gundam (AKA 38 years to the day since Mobile Suit Gundam came out), I made a video about how to get started with one of my favorite hobbies! I wrote all about making the video on Gunpla 101.
- The Eccentric Family (the gorgeous show in my lead illustration) is back! To celebrate, Peter Fobian wrote about the nuanced way the show portrays family ties.
- By the way, what are you watching this season? I’m still on board with My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, and the aforementioned Eccentric Family. Definitely sticking with Natsume’s Book of Friends and Yowamushi Pedal New Generation as well. As for new shows, I’m interested in Sakura Quest and the Royal Tutor so far.
- I finally saw Your Name this week and it was so beautiful I almost cried. I’m not going to say anything about it yet except that @PassionTentacle found out that you can write in a diary just like the one Taki uses in the movie on your iPhone or Android.
- Kara explains what the heck a “voice remake” is. Do you think an old anime can be given new life with a more modern dub—and all the original animation intact?
- Caroline Olsen, a published BL (that’s Boys’ Love) author, explains the origins of the term and the history of its fandom on Yattatachi.
- A woman brings her therapy dog to a furry convention, assuming it’s a convention for pets. This is one of those news story where you read the title and it’s 10x better than you expected.

“Eccentric Family” for life! http://www.ganriki.org/article/the-eccentric-family/
Incidentally, the author of the novels the series is based on also created “The Tatami Galaxy”, another show I can’t say enough good things about: http://www.ganriki.org/article/tatami-galaxy/
‘Twould be nice to have his work translated into English.
I also have a longish item in the works vis-a-vis “Academia”, “One Punch Man”, and “Tokyo ESP” in re how each of them respins the superhero concept into new directions.
“your name.” isn’t playing anywhere near me, so I’d have to wait until it comes out on video. I have deeply mixed feelings about Makoto Shinkai; his work is so good to look at it feels bad to say anything negative about it, but his last full-length film was a flat homage (shilling for ripoff) of self-admitted Miyazaki/Ghibli tropes. (Hence the wrong-headed “next Miyazaki” praise, which is about the worst thing you can call someone; it prevents them all the more from coming into their own instead of living in the borrowed splendor of another creator.) I keep wanting him to dig deep and pull out something really amazing, so maybe he’s nailed it this time.
@GenjiPress:disqus I want to read the novels, too! Sorry Your Name isn’t playing near you. You will DEFINITELY see a Princess Mononoke reference in this film, too, so I’m dying to know what you think.
Was reminded about the paper works attached to Your Name and went and wishlisted them. Was able to catch it over the weekend. It was pretty good. Though I feel like after Beyond the Clouds, 5cm, I kinda felt the same emotional arc as the other two? It’s a good arc, and there’s a bit more this time around, but long distance/disconnected boy girl relationship feels familiar at this point. Like the ending was better just because it wasn’t the one from 5cm. Not including that third act.
But it did rekindle my demand for slice of life drama so I watched more March and Sakura Quest to fill this daily life void this movie gave me.
