- I admit I’ve spent a good part of this week thinking about and trying to learn from last week’s failure. I actually made a Reddit thread about it and the advice I got was pretty humbling. (I’m a little embarrassed to even be sharing it!)
- On the same topic, one article that really resonated with me was Steven Savage’s post on the importance of marketing yourself in geek career fields, Are You A Fact?
- Do journalists joke too much on Twitter? I’ll admit stuff like this is a bit silly, but I like to see the personalities of the people who deliver our news. I really liked my former colleague Kris Holt’s blog post on the topic.
- Tomorrow I’m heading to my local card shop to play in the Magic: The Gathering Gatecrash prerelease tournament. There’s a young crowd which means I always end up losing to a lot of twelve-year-olds who insist they’re “going easy on me.” This time though, I’m boning up on Prerelease survival articles in advance. Wish me luck!
- Sweet, more Genshiken anime! I bet Viga, the East Coast’s biggest Genshiken fan, is freaking out right about now. (And if you ever get a chance to see one of her panels on the series, they’re fantastic.)
- Speaking of talented panelists, I’ve been lucky enough to attend Charles Dunbar‘s lecture on Yokai more than once, and he always mentions a Yokai-heavy anime called Natsume’s Book of Friends. I never realized the show is on Crunchyroll now. Guess I know how I’ll be spending my free time for the next few weeks.

Glad my article helped. It’s something I’m working on now – really establishing myself more. I am, but it’s kind of etheral and disconnected.
@Steven that’s why I linked you to that Reddit thread. Reddit can be harsh, but it’s mostly all true stuff I needed to hear.
Oh my gosh, I LOVE Charles’s panels! Have you been to his Shinigami panel? That one got me hooked on “Soul Eater” and has encouraged me to continue attending his panels. Seeing the academic side of anime always fascinates me; I end up taking more notes at his panels than I ever did in my college classes! (Natsume Book of Friends is a wonderful anime, although I’ve only seen it subbed. Thanks for the awesome links!)
@Kat, I saw his Shinigami panel years ago, and since he’s always updating and revising his panels, it might not be the same one you saw! I’m a big fan and I can’t wait until he turns his thesis on anime and religious pilgrimage into a book.
I first saw him at AnimeNEXT 2010…wow, it’s hard to believe that was two years ago! He did say that it had evolved since then. I can’t wait to see what he has at Katsucon this year. A book based on his thesis would be awesome.
I did read (at least some) of the Reddit thread… It looks like you got some good advice, and I hope it will help you out. I don’t know if this would help, but I found that I got a lot of traffic (relatively speaking) after posting some on The Something Awful Forums. There are threads about books and some other fannish things there…I admit, I haven’t explored very much because while some threads are interesting and informative, others are rather…disheartening. But if you find one you like and contribute with a link to Otaku Journalist, at least a few viewers may follow.
Wow, there’s a Reddit for everything.
Indeed there is! http://www.reddit.com/r/everything
